About Chi Phi

The Authentic Fraternity

The Chi Phi Fraternity was founded in 1824 and came into existence as it is today when the three founding orders joined together in 1874. Today, the Chi Phi Fraternity consists of 59 Chapters and Colonies in 22 States and Commonwealths. It exists to provide men with a place of belonging and membership and a framework for growth and personal development throughout their collegiate years.

Founded on the principles of truth, honor and personal integrity, the Fraternity is ever striving to move forward in providing for the needs of our members while helping to communicate the possibilities of Fraternity life to future members. In keeping with the trends of today's society and student, the Fraternity has made several changes over the recent years. However, none may be more important than the renewal of our commitment to the Fraternity's founding principles and the development of today's authentic man.

Our Story

The Chi Phi Fraternity, as it exists today, is the outgrowth of three older organizations, each of which bore the name of "Chi Phi." These organizations were called the Chi Phi Society, founded at the College of New Jersey, now known as Princeton University; Chi Phi Fraternity, established at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and the Secret Order of Chi Phi, founded at Hobart College in Geneva, New York. During two chance encounters in New York City, members from the three original orders were brought together and, after many mutual concessions, the union between the three orders was agreed upon in 1874. The merger in 1874 is today known as the Chi Phi Fraternity - “The oldest social men's Fraternity in North America."

Chi Phi Chivalry

Being a Chi Phi is also about being a gentleman. A truly chivalrous Fraternity, Chi Phi's southern heritage instills an element of etiquette, demeanor, and proper social graces into our culture. Chi Phi has espoused those characteristics for almost two centuries and even today promotes such actions through their New Member educational programs, regular social activities with campus sororities, and even philanthropic work with the charities and within the community. Most importantly, however, one can see the chivalric nature of our Fraternity in the day-to-day actions of our brothers.

The true gentleman is a man whose conduct proceeds from goodwill and an acute sense of propriety, and whose self-control is equal to all emergencies; who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty, the obscure man of his obscurity, or any man of his inferiority or deformity; who is himself humbled when necessity compels him to humble another; who does not flatter wealth, cringe before power, or boast of his own possessions or achievements; who speaks with frankness but with sincerity and sympathy always; whose deed follows his word; who thinks of the rights and feelings of others rather than his own; and who appears well in any company, a man with whom honor is sacred and virtue is safe.

About Tau Zeta

The Tau Zeta Chapter of the Chi Phi Fraternity was established at Boston University in 1989 and colonized nationally in March of 1995. We pride ourselves on being the closest group of brothers in the Boston University community with a strong focus on both social and philanthropic activities. Our brothers are known on campus as an outgoing, fun (and sometimes crazy) group of people who bring positive change to the community. Tau Zeta currently has 59 active members and will be welcoming the Alpha Chi pledge class in the spring of 2012. Our size guarantees that every one of our brothers shares a close and personal connection. We are a Fraternity, not a small high school. For every brother, joining Tau Zeta has helped created bonds in college that very few other organizations can.

The Brotherhood

As a whole, we defy one mold. We are not made by the cookie-cutter. We are not the jocks, the book worms, the party animals, the foreigners, the athletes, the nice guys, the preps or the punks; we are all of those things and more. Tau Zeta boasts a wide range of unique men, hailing from places like New England, the Tri-State area, Texas, California, Italy, and even Dubai. We have fitness gurus, talented singers, amateur photographers, fast-fingered musicians, Eagle Scouts, skateboarders, even a brother who climbed Mount Kilamanjaro. You name it, we do it.
